Single-Chip 76-to-81GHz mmWave Sensor Integrating MCU and Hardware Accelerator The IWR1443 device is an integrated single-chip mmWave sensor based on FMCW radar technologycapable of operation in the 76- to 81-GHz band with up to 4 GHz continuous chirp. The device is built withTI’s low-power 45-nm RFCMOS process, and this solution enables unprecedented levels of integration inan extremely small form factor. The IWR1443 is an ideal solution for low-power, self-monitored, ultraaccurateradar systems in the industrial applications such as building automation, factory automation,drones, material handling, traffic monitoring, and surveillance.

The IWR1443 device is a self-contained, single-chip solution that simplifies the implementation ofmmWave sensors in the band of 76 to 81 GHz. The IWR1443 includes a monolithic implementation of a3TX, 4RX system with built-in PLL and A2D converters. The device includes fully configurable hardwareaccelerator that supports complex FFT and CFAR detection. Additionally, the device includes two ARMR4F-based processor subsystems: one processor subsystem is for master control, and additionalalgorithms; a second processor subsystem is responsible for front-end configuration, control, andcalibration. Simple programming model changes can enable a wide variety of sensor implementation with

the possibility of dynamic reconfiguration for implementing a multimode sensor. Additionally, the device isprovided as a complete platform solution including reference hardware design, software drivers, sampleconfigurations, API guide, training, and user documentation.

TI Design TIDEP-0091 highlights strategies for power optimization of IWR14xx 76- to 81-GHz mmWave sensors in tank level-probing applications, displacement sensors, 4- to 20-mA sensors, and other low-power applications for detecting range with high accuracy in a minimal power envelope. In these applications, the system often operates on a low-voltage data line that provides less power than the operational power consumption. Duty cycling is critical to reducing the average power to meet the power input restrictions. Power optimization is achieved through MSP432 external duty cycling the IWR14xx device for periodic sensing. Additionally, this TI Design provides a sample configuration for single-dimensional range detection.

In the TIDEP-0091 the MSP432 LaunchPad™ is the master controller and is physically connected to theIWR1443 EVM through the standard LaunchPad, 20-pin headers. All communication between the boardsis accomplished using these headers. A standard, 3-pin serial peripheral interface (SPI) is used ascommunications protocol, and general purpose IOs (GPIOs) are used for control and measurementflagging. User communication is provided through a micro-USB cable, which carries standard UART serialdata to a host (PC) terminal window.

The MSP432 is directed through UART commands to power up the IWR1443 as necessary, to obtainrange measurements through SPI from the IWR1443, and to power down the system when not in use.

These steps are taken to reduce the average power required to take periodic measurements—animportant goal for industrial applications. The MSP432 will remain in a low-power mode whenever notprocessing a measurement or UART command.
